trailer for an upcoming 90 minute documentary to be released in 2010

VINYL : THE DOCUMENTARY

Vinyl is a 2000 documentary film by Toronto filmmaker/record collector Alan Zweig. In the film, Zweig seeks not to talk to people who collect vinyl records to discuss music, but rather to discuss what drives someone to collect records in the first place. Zweig spends a large portion of the film in stylized self-filmed "confessions", where he expounds on his life in regards to record collecting, feeling it has prevented him from fulfilling his dreams of a family.

In addition to celebrities like Canadian director/actor Don McKellar and American Splendor creator Harvey Pekar, Zweig speaks to a variety of record collectors, including a car wash employee who claims to own over one million records and also claims to have memorized the track listing of every K-Tel collection he owns, a government employee who refuses to organize his collection because he doesn't want people to come over, and a man who threw out his large record collection rather than sell or give it away because he didn't want anyone else to own it.

After seeing several clips of this documentary on YouTube I was desparate to get a hold of the full-length version. It took some time and lots of searching but I finally managed to track down a copy.

This is a real insight into the psyche of record collectors and is sometimes just too close to reality for comfort. It is however a fascinating watch and highly recommended for anyone who loves looking at other peoples collections.

All credit for this video rip/conversion goes to the person who did the hard work and originally shared it. I have designed some pretty basic dvd covers to house it for myself and have included them in the download.

The film is encoded in the DivX format so you will need something that can play the format. A DivX compatible dvd player is the easiest solution. You simply burn the file to disc as data, no special technique needed!

Enjoy!
